The people of Jiujiang and the news

Historical Development

The name Jiujiang, was first seen in Shangshu, Yugong, where it was recorded as “Jiujiang Kong Yin”, “go through Jiujiang to Donglin”, etc. There are two different versions of the origin of the name “Jiujiang”, one of which described “Jiu(nine)” as the biggest number in ancient Chinese’s minds, referring to “many” or “countless” here, so “Jiujiang” means “the place where rivers gather”(“Jiang” means “river” in English). The other version holds that the number “Jiu” is referring to a certain series of nine rivers (the Ganjiang River, the Poyang Lake, the Yu River, the Xiu River, the Gan River, the Xu River, the Shu River, the Nan River, and the Peng River), as it is written in ancient book that “the nine rivers flow into the lake of Pengli”. So according to this, Jiujiang is the place where the nine rivers gather. The Yangtze River passes by Jiujiang, where the Poyang Lake and the rivers of Jiangxi, Anhui and Hubei provinces join and flow together forward into the sea, forming magnificent scenery of water and a spectacular sight of the Yangtze River.??

Jiujiang was developed earlier in ancient time. In the Xia and Shang Dynasties, Jiujiang belongs to Jingzhou and Yangzhou. Jiujiang was located in the west territory of the Wu Kingdom and the east of the Chu Kingdom during Spring and Autumn Period, so it was called "the head of the Wu Kingdom and the tail of the Chu Kingdom". Jiujiang first came into being as an administrative division during the Qin Dynasty, the First Emperor of Qin established 36 prefectures including Jiujiang Prefecture. Later it was called Jiangzhou, Chaisang, Xunyang, Runan, Pencheng, Dehua, etc. Among these names, Jiujiang, Chaisang, Xunyang and Jiangzhou are well known.??

Jiujiang was liberated on May 17th, 1949. And the Office of the?Inspector in Jiujiang Partition of Jiangxi Provincial Government was set up in July, 1949. The office governed 7 counties including Jiujiang County, Ruichang County, Wuning County, Yongxiu County, Xingzi County, De'an County and Jin’an County, with Jiujiang as its seat?of?government. Afterwards, there were few changes in Jiujiang’s jurisdiction. At present, there are counties (Jiujiang, Wuning, Xiushui, Yongxiu, De’an, Duchang, Hukou, Pengze), county-level cities (Ruichang, Lushan and Gongqing City,), two districts (Xunyang and Lianxi), one development zone (Jiujiang Economic & Technological Development Zone), Lushan Scenic Spot Administration Bureau, Lushan Xihai Scenic Spot and Balihu New Urban District under Jiujiang’s jurisdiction.??
